About Us

Mission Statement:

“The mission of Zion United Church of Christ of Steubenville, Ohio, is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ through worship, prayer, Bible Study and fellowship. It is our further purpose to serve as beacon in our community and testament to God’s eternal love by providing the resources and facilities that will strengthen our own relationship with God and encourage others to embark on a journey of faith”

What we Believe:

We believe in the birth, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We believe that those who confess with their mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in their hearts that God raised him from the dead, will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. (Romans 1:9-10)

What we do:

We have an active church choir 12 months a year. We also have a women's group which meets monthly and shares special luncheons and meals throughout the year.  Our hand bell choir ministers throughout the year with special selections during the Easter and Christmas seasons. The children's choir ministers on the 5th Sundays of the month. We also participate in community organizations which are dedicated to helping the poor and underserved.  These include Urban Mission Ministries (food, Christmas stockings and tags), Salvation Army (Angel Tree), JOSHUA (home repairs for the needy), AIM Women’s Center (women in crisis pregnancies), One Great Hour of Sharing, Neighbors in Need, and other charitable organizations.

Denomination:

The United Church of Christ is a uniting church as well as a united church.  Because faith can be expressed in many ways, we do not impose a set of formulated doctrines or Biblical interpretations upon any member.  Neither do we make a list of religious ideas or theological concepts in which all members must believe.

We recognize that the Bible, although written in specific historical times, still speaks to us in our present condition.  In all matters, members are encouraged to exercise personal responsibility for the interpretation and application of the Word of God to their lives.  Members are bound together in fellowship and service by the belief in the central theme of the New Testament, viz., that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and the Lord and Savior given for all people.

The freedom of thought and opinion in the United Church of Christ leads many people of varying shades of religious thought to find a home within our membership.

In other words, “No creed but CHRIST; no book but the BIBLE; in essentials, UNITY; in opinion, LIBERTY; in all things, CHARITY.
